GLHV doesn't have a protocol for recommending individual doctors or counsellors and directs you to the ALSO directory online which has some gay friendly services, or the ASHM directory which lists doctors who have trained in the area of HIV and sexual health, but not necessarily on gay and lesbian health.
The Australian Lesbian Medical Association (ALMA) are currently compiling a list of doctors who are recommended by lesbian and bisexual women. The project is being piloted in Victoria and will be rolled out nationally in October 2010. There are currently around 30 doctors on the list, including GPs and specialists, metropolitan and rural doctors.
Go to www.doclist.com.au for more information.
GLHV has also produced a brochure with tips and advice on how to locate a gay and lesbian friendly health service. Find out more.
There are of course many other local doctors, counsellors and health services who are great, so shop around.
GLHV has a tool kit for health services to improve their sensitivity to GLBTI clients. You may like to request a set for your local health service.
