The system of de facto property settlement in Victoria is set to undergo significant amendment in late 2008 with the enactment of the Relationship Bill. This legislation will radically change the system for property division, upon the breakdown of a domestic relationship, bringing it more into line with the current system of matrimonial property division.
At this stage it is unclear whether the Relationship Bill will prove an interim or permanent measure. What is clear is that - for the time being at least - it will become the prevailing legislation for Victorian de facto couples. As such it is essential that its requirements are carefully considered and understood.
With this in mind, Lander and Rogers Lawyers have generously provided pro bono advice to the Lobby summarising the Relationship Bill's key features and what it will mean for de facto couples in Victoria.
