The {also} Foundation in collaboration with the Council on the Ageing and the City of Yarra, and with sponsorship from Bendigo Bank, is launching an exercise program for over 50s.
The program will start on 7 July 2009 with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30am at the Richmond Leisure Centre. The aim will be to make the sessions an ongoing activity at the Richmond Leisure Centre.
Strength training (or resistance or weight training as it is sometimes called) involves use of weights to build muscle strength and endurance. To be effective, the program must be progressive—as you become stronger, the weights you use should increase.
The gym sessions target core, balance, resistance (strength) and stretching in a one hour format which will raise the strength of each participant.
You do not have to be a member of {also} to join the program, but you do need to register through {also} initially to receive an information pack and the free individual gym assessment.
Sessions are conducted by qualified trainers in a separate fully equipped gym of the Richmond Recreation Centre in Gleadell Street, Richmond.
The centre is assessable by tram via Bridge Road, train via West Richmond Station (and a good walk along Highett St) and there is 2 hour car parking at the front of the centre.
Registered participants get individual exercise programs at no cost. Participants need to wear gym shoes and loose clothing.
Each session costs $5.40 for those over 50 and $2.70 for concession card holders and is payable on entry.
